It is a Good Movie for all ages to enjoy.HBO’s Game of Thrones is coming to an end this weekend, and once it’s over, the network will have to figure out what its next big hit will be. In this imaginary world the soul is separated from the body and exists as a companion creature that accompanies the individual throughout life. *These animals are part of the individual. Some may be bothered by seeing every human accompanied by what appears to be an animal familiarly referred to as a daemon* (no it's not a demon, think of the Hellenistic concept of the daemonic). The portrayal of an evil ruling body known as the Magisterium may hit a little too close to home for some Catholics. I'm certain that the biggest body of complaints come from Christian factions that don't like their belief system challenged in any form. You have to exert a little effort & brain power to work your way into this alternate universe be fore settling down for the ride. You can't just jump into this film and immediately know what's going on. It might be a case of not appreciating the complexity of the story. Maybe even more amazing to me than how good this film is, is the high volume of criticism and low ratings I have seen. The storyline is original, highly controversial (or at least in the mind of some religious groups). I shudder to think there are people out there who would find anything offensive with this film as it is overflowing with heartwarming attributes. This film is a delight for children and adults as well. Here we have tangible evidence we should not let any special interest dictate what we should or should not watch. Good for older kids perhaps, but probably not younger ones. The air scenes and use of glowing power source in the carriages verses the use of horses was very interesting and there were a few scenes that were captivating, but I was left with a feeling of being hung out to dry in damp weather. There were some good scenes, but it was your typical prequel movie, where you are strung along waitng for a final tie up and only end up with what amounts to a commercial within the movie to come watch the next movie, which was very disapointing and somewhat of a rip off. What I did see was a criticism of authoritarian governments, aiken to Gallileo being tried for heresy.Īs for the witchcraft and magic, it was on a par with Harry Potter. I am a Christian, so was a bit reluctant to watch another Christian bashing movie, but I honestly did not see that. I had heard a lot of hype about this movie when it first came out and purchased the DVD (cheaper than seeing the movie).

While fans of the books may find fault with this streamlined version, children are sure to revel in the many talking animals and whimsical airships. The film version carefully steers clear of these themes, and instead puts its enormous budget into creating visually stunning effects. By the film's end, she has vowed to track down her Uncle Asriel, and to discover the true power of Dust.Hollywood had a tricky time of taming this tale, as Pullman's books portray religion - the Catholic Church in particular - in a less than flattering light. Lyra finds her friends, and so discovers the evil plans the Magisterium has cooked up for the world's children. Coulter, but when she learns that her friends have been kidnapped by "Gobblers," she heads out to find them, and soon joins forces with the nomadic Gyptians, some witches, and an armored bear called Iorek Byrnison (voice by Ian McKellen). Before Lyra leaves, the Headmaster gives her a golden compass, a device which only she can read, and from which she can intuit the truth.

Coulter (Nicole Kidman) arrives, she asks Lyra to accompany her on a trip to the North to meet the Panserbjorne, a race of armored bears. The people are ruled by a shadowy and oppressive council known as the Magisterium, which is doing it's best to keep everyone from getting information about what is called "Dust." Lyra's Uncle Asriel (Daniel Craig) has been researching Dust, and he has seen to it that Lyra is given safe shelter at Jordan College. The story opens with Lyra Belacqua (Dakota Blue Richards) an orphan girl who lives in an alternate world that is similar to earth, but where people's souls exist outside of their bodies in animal form.
